The domain ending with the most personality is popping two corks this month: .ME is celebrating its fifth birthday on July 16, 2013. The TLD has also reached the 700,000 domain registration mark.
.ME has counted as one of the most wanted TLDs on the net right from the start. Just two weeks after its launch, 100,000 addresses had already been registered, with the number growing to 320,000 by March 2010. .ME is one of the fastest growing domain endings of all time.
From the beginning, the ending from Montenegro was accepted as a gTLD rather than a ccTLD – as ME clearly stands for the personalized first person in English. Google also treats the domain ending as a gTLD, in much the same way as .CO or .TV. This makes .ME extremely interesting for users without any connection to Montenegro.
However, above all, .ME means "Personality" on the net. Out of the 700,000 registrations, around 57 percent belong to private individuals – only around 43 percent can be attributed to companies. The domain ending is particularly popular in Germany and USA. 40 percent of registrations come from the United States, while 20 percent are home to Germany.
